Briefly here, it has a chameleon's history.
It seems Kings Cross is not directly named after its London counterpart. A century ago it was actually called Queens Cross until a change in the monachy. Apparently "the Cross" part relates to the crossing of 3 major thoroughfares - Darlinghurst Road, Victoria Street and William Street.
Until American G.I.s made it their home away from home starting with WWII, through the Vietnam War and on, it was a quiet hamlet of the aristocrats. Now its home to the full gamut, the 'down on their luck', nouveau riche, inherited, TV/Film celebrities, writers, artists - you bump into them all.
The Cross is in a c tant state of proverbial flux:
- early century, 4-storey terrace house with picket fence -- where KX Station entrance now is;
- the park and El Alamein fountain area -- once the rambling Maramanah mansion;
- in '78, the inaugural Sydney Mardi Gras ended up at the Palladium, home to the famous Les Girls -- now a hotel;
- and in the new millennium, you'll never guess what the old KFC turned into...
To maintain the desired illusion, within a block of the main strip people living in the same apartment building have multiple addresses - 4 different suburbs: Kings Cross, Elizabeth Bay, Potts Point or Rushcutters Bay (all with the same 2011 postcode).
It's become an international magnet - officially the most densely populated area in Australia, with 49 percent of locals having a different address 5 years earlier.
